Actually, they are not Polish though they do kind of resemble them. They are a breed that is specific to Kosovo called the Kosovo Longcrower. The males have a very long crow and were bred for that. All of them have that distinctive "mohawk" of feathers on top of their heads, though they don't grow as long as the Polish do. They are often solid black, but weren't bred for color specifically so there are variations though black is always the base. Our current rooster, Bert (shown in the article), is a colored Kosovo Longcrower.

Becky is a Sapphire Gem. A beautiful deep grey color.

Shelia is a Sultan. That is an ornamental breed that was bred for looks to decorate the gardens of the Sultan in Turkey.

The reddish ones in the pictures are called Isa Browns. They are also called Cinnamon Queens or even Battery hens. They are a hybrid that is the most common on chicken farms for brown eggs. They were bred to live fast and die young. They will lay almost everyday for about two years and then end up with a host of issues if allowed to grow old. I didn't know these sad truths when I bought them. I just liked their color. I would never get them again as I don't want to support such cruel breeding.

Our past rooster and one of his daughters are a hybrid with a Transylvanian Naked Neck (show in the article). They are know in the states usually as a Turken. They don't have feathers on their necks and have very thick skin. You can tell ours are hybrids because they have a tuft of feathers on the front of their neck often called a "bowtie". A pure bred won't have this.

The white with black markings hen showed in the first picture I have never been able to figure out her breed. I have seen pictures of other ones, so I know it is a breed but haven't found the name.

We used to have a Buff Cochin Bantam, which was adorable. She was killed by a fox the same day Zoe was. That breed is a buff tan color and has feathers on their legs and a really round body. The Bantam means she was a dwarf size for her breed.

Most of ours are the Kosovo Longcrower. They are the most common sold here. Plus, they are excellent breeders and mothers so that is the most common babies we end up with. They are also a dual purpose bird, meaning they are good egg layers but also have a good amount of meat on them, both qualities that are desired here.

I hope that answered your question! Thank you so much for reading and responding!
