Different ways to fight disease. In Europe most chickens are vaccinated against salmonella. In the US, they clean the bacteria off the shell. Of course, vaccination means the meat is salmonella free as well and in the US we are always taught to treat all raw chicken as if it has salmonella and people still get sick. So I don't understand.
I don't vaccinate. My birds have never been sick from salmonella nor have we gotten sick from them. I still use safe raw meat handling procedures as I think that is just good sense. The only reason I don't vaccinate is we have a small flock and I would know if they were sick. Larger flocks it can be easy to miss.
