I also find it interesting that the book also equates wearing long earrings with "primitive" practices and in the painting the black woman has on long earrings but the white woman doesn't.
The bottom of the book page seems to mention lace ruffs but the thought seems to be continued on the next (unshown) page. It would be interesting to see the rest.
I assume they were linking this all back to I Peter 3:3
"Your [women] beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes." A common passage for stressing modesty and simplicity in Christian women's appearance.
