I am surprised that no one has referenced the breakup of Yugoslavia and what a cluster fuck that was and in some ways, still is.

I am writing this from my home in Kosovo, which is only safe thanks to the military power of the United States. All because our neighbors to the north think this land is theirs even though they don't live on it anymore and haven't for a very long time. And lost a war for it.

A world of micronations sounds wonderful but I don't think it fits in human nature. There will always be some bully trying to take what isn't theirs, forcing other nations to band together. Thus eventually creating big nations again.

Another legitimate concern is what will come from having nations based solely on ethnic similarity. The EU has been opposed to Kosovo joining Albania because they say nations should be more ethnically diverse or it will create racism. Mostly I don't agree with this until the subject of stateless minorities comes up, such as the Roma. They already endure such horrible persecution. Would it be worse in a micronation where they are always the outsider even more then they are now?

This is a very interesting article that brings up a lot of food for thought. Good job.
