I made the comment about Canada because I thought that you are from there based on the other article's mention of the mug. But seeing your response to another comment here, maybe I was wrong and if I am, I am sorry.
Traveling in Muslim countries can be super hard sometimes for white Westerners. Colonialism has caused such a divide between our countries and cultures. One tip is to try dressing a bit more like locals in the future. A simple scarf over the head (you don't have to hide all your hair) goes a long way to showing respect and having them respect you. Also, hiding tattoos is a good idea. Tattoos are seen as a mark of a criminal in most Muslim countries since they are haraam (forbidden) and so only criminals usually get them. Also wear pants (or a long skirt). Even men shouldn't show their legs above the knee. Learn some of the language. Also, stay away from tourist areas. That is especially where you will have problems. And learn the local body language. Yelling in Egypt doesn't tell people no. Many Arabic countries seem to yell a lot to Western ears. So does the Balkans (where I live). Yelling back doesn't tell them you are saying no. Instead you are engaging with them. Learn how they say no.
I really respect what you are both doing with your life. And you said in your about statement you don't have plans on where to go beyond tomorrow. You might want to rethink that a little to do some more research as to how to communicate with the people where you choose to go. I hope your travels continue and you both enjoy them!
