Medium is Not an Airport

You don’t need to announce your departure.

There is a response I have seen commonly used on Facebook whenever someone states that they are leaving, “This isn’t an airport. You don’t need to announce your departure.”

Which translates to, “We don’t care if you don’t want to be a part of this community anymore. You can just leave. No one is making you stay. You clearly just want attention. Go away.”

This is exactly what some articles make me want to comment on Medium. You know the ones. We have all seen them. The ones that are titled something like “I am Leaving Medium”.

The article will then go on to say how the writer’s earnings have tanked recently compared to other months. They blame it on whatever changes Medium has recently made. There is never any mention of how maybe they didn’t write anything anyone wanted to read that month or that maybe they didn’t publish as much or any of the other dozen reasons that can affect earnings.

It is always Medium’s fault. Always!

They usually go on to say how Medium doesn’t care about it’s writers. How Medium “promised” something but now is doing something different. Or how it was better when we were paid per claps (no, it really wasn’t) or whatever.
