Much of what you said in this article could be said for SE Europe (the Balkans) as well. No one born and raised here can understand why I wanted to leave America and love it here. (My circumstances are a bit different as my husband is from here and we moved back to his home. We have been here 2 years and this is my forever home.)

I am so glad the digital nomads haven't been interested in our area much! What you said about being spit out is so true of any poor country. These people have to deal with situations we can't even imagine in the West. They don't have the time, or the interest, to coddle Westerners.

I am tired of digital nomads and "expats" who essentially use poor countries and never give back. They are there for the cheap food/accommodations, the beautiful weather/scenery, and the "exotic" label they earn on Instagram. People's homes and cultures are not just for consumption and social media cred. The whole attitude you describe so accurately is not ok.

Great article!
