They feel attacked because they know they are doing wrong. They always come up with excuses.
Are there non-Indigenous people who have been adopted into an Indigenous person's culture and have been given the rights to use white sage? Probably. But the people who are in that circumstance don't feel the need to comment and say, "but what about meeeeee? I know I am respectful of the tradition. You can tell how respectful I am by this not respectful comment I just posted." 🤦♀️
I am a white woman who has joined a culture that I am not in any way native to. I have moved to where these people live. I have married into them. I eat their food everyday. I speak their language. I follow their traditions and on the rare occasion that I choose not to, I always remember that the tradition is still valid even if it isn't for me. I never feel the need to comment and ask a stranger on the internet if how I live my life is ok or make excuses. The people here who have accepted me as both friend and family are the only acceptance I need and clearly what these commentors don't have.
Your article is excellent and the comments clearly show who the article was intended for. You hit it home. Bravo!
