You are absolutely right. We moved. I had to get my husband out of there and back to his home culture. He is an ethnic Albanian (so presents as white) and everything would be fine until he spoke. His thick accent and poor English would make it clear that he was "not one of us". When the police harassment started by a local cop who kept pulling my husband over for drinking and driving (he said his poor English and stuttering, which he does in his own language as well, was proof) I knew we had to get out. Of course, he always passed the breathalyzer! We are Muslims. We don't drink alcohol. But even after being forced out of my home where I had lived my entire life, I feel like I jumped ship like a coward. Running away won't fix the issue. But it has helped my husband, who's mental health issues had become serious due to the abuse. He is doing so much better here. And I don't face the same kind of behavior as an immigrant in Kosovo as he did in America. Which makes me deeply ashamed of my culture and people. But my husband is more important to me than those cowards. They can fix their own issues. I am done.
